Coming from Misawa?
Welcome! Risoukyo is in the countryside of Towada, a short trip from Misawa. Here is what English-speaking visitors usually ask.
- Train + taxi: Aoimori Railway Misawa Station, then about 30 min by taxi. Book your taxi home in advance — taxis are few at night (Towada taxi companies are listed under “For visitors”).
- Driving: plan for snow and ice in late December (winter tires). Parking for 300+ cars (planned). Never drink and drive — Japan is zero tolerance in practice.
- Stalls take cash, QR-code payments and cards (each stall decides which), so bring some yen as a backup. Trash bins and a smoking area are on site.
- It is an outdoor night event in sub-freezing weather: warm coat, hat, gloves and boots with grip.
- Some shop and performer descriptions on this page are in Japanese — your browser’s translate feature works well.

What is a Christmas market?
Christmas markets are a winter tradition in Germany and elsewhere in Europe dating back to the Middle Ages.
During Advent, the weeks before Christmas, wooden stalls fill the town square, and people enjoy mulled wine (Glühwein) and grilled sausages and pick out ornaments and gifts while waiting for Christmas.
In Japan, too, they are now a winter favorite held every year in Yokohama, Tokyo, Sendai and more.
