Key points
- From Aoimori Railway Misawa Station, the official access page gives about 30 minutes by taxi to Risoukyo. From Kamikita Station or Shichinohe-Towada Station it is about 20 minutes by taxi.
- We have no verified drive time from Misawa Air Base, so rely on your navigation app and add padding for snow and darkness.
- If you drive: winter tires, a slow pace, extra following distance and extra caution at bridges and tunnel exits, where black ice forms first. Never drive after drinking.
- If you take a taxi, book your return ride in advance. Do not count on finding one at a rural venue at 9:00 p.m.
The short version
The Risoukyo Christmas Market 2026 is planned for Dec 23 to 27, from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. (planned), at Handmade Village Risoukyo, 2-21 Torigamori, Fukamochi, Towada, Aomori 034-0106. You can reach it by car or by train plus taxi. From Misawa, both are reasonable. The decision comes down to whether you are comfortable driving rural roads in the dark in snow, and whether anyone in your group plans to drink. The full market guide has the event details.
Option 1: Train to Misawa Station, then taxi
Aoimori Railway Misawa Station is the closest rail option the official access page lists for Misawa residents. From there, the taxi ride to Risoukyo is about 30 minutes. A few notes:
- Aoimori Railway is a separate operator from JR. Misawa Station is on the Aoimori Railway Line, 46.9 km (about 29 miles) from Aomori Station by rail, per Wikipedia.
- Wikipedia lists a bus as the only connection at Misawa Station. Do not assume there is a taxi stand with cars waiting at every hour, particularly late in the evening.
- We did not verify train timetables or fares. Check the current Aoimori Railway schedule, including the last train in your direction.
This route makes sense if you are already staying near Misawa Station or arriving by train from elsewhere. If you live on base, you still need a way to the station, so getting to the station adds a step, and for many families the car is simpler. Weigh the extra step against not driving at night in snow.
Option 2: Shinkansen to Shichinohe-Towada, then taxi
Shichinohe-Towada Station, on the Tohoku Shinkansen, is about 20 minutes by taxi from Risoukyo. The station opened on Dec 4, 2010, when the Shinkansen was extended from Hachinohe to Shin-Aomori. Wikipedia notes that Hayabusa and Hayate services stop here, though not every train does.
This is the better option for visitors coming from Tokyo or Sendai, and for friends and family visiting you. It is a less obvious fit if you are starting from Misawa, since you would need to get to Shichinohe-Towada Station first. For people who live near Misawa, driving directly may be more practical.
Kamikita Station on the Aoimori Railway is also about 20 minutes by taxi from Risoukyo, per the official access page. The English access page lists all of the official directions, and the English overview has the latest event news.
Night taxis: book the return ride
The market ends at 9:00 p.m. (planned), and Risoukyo is in a rural part of Towada. It is not a taxi-rank location. A venue that empties all at once, in winter weather, is exactly where an unbooked taxi is hard to find. Treat the return ride as the thing you plan first.
- Book both legs ahead of time by phone, ideally through someone who speaks Japanese, or ask your hotel or a Japanese friend to call. Give the exact address in Japanese: 青森県十和田市深持字鳥ケ森2-21.
- Agree a pickup time and point, for example near the main entrance at a set time after the market closes.
- Have a backup. Save the taxi company's number in your phone and keep a charged power bank, since cold drains batteries quickly.
- Ask about card payment. Not all taxis take cards or foreign cards. Carry yen. See cash and payments at Japan events.
We are not recommending a particular taxi company, because we could not verify one against an official source. Your hotel or a Japanese-speaking friend can help you find one.
Option 3: Driving in winter
Many Misawa families will drive. The official access page gives about 50 minutes by car from Hachinohe, about 70 minutes from Aomori City and about 40 minutes from Oirase Gorge. It does not give a time from Misawa Air Base, and we did not verify one, so use your navigation app and add padding.
If you are not used to driving in snow, the safest answer in heavy snow is to not drive, and take the train and taxi option or pick another night. The market runs five days, so you can choose the day with the best forecast.
Tires and equipment
The Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) says regular tires are unsafe on snow and recommends snow tires or chains. It advises carrying chains and a jack even with studless tires. NEXCO East Japan, which runs the expressways in the region, tells drivers to fit winter tires before the snow season and carry chains. The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) says rental cars should have studless tires, chains and a jack stand, plus jumper cables and emergency blankets.
Follow your unit's and the base's current guidance for off-base travel and winter driving, and check your own vehicle's tires and battery before the trip.
Black ice
JAF notes that the greatest risk is when daytime snow melts or when temperatures drop after rain. The road may look wet and dark but be frozen. The most dangerous spots are bridges, exposed overpasses, and tunnel entrances and exits. The Nagano Prefectural Police say to expect frozen roads late at night and in the early morning. Since the market ends at 9:00 p.m. and the Towada December average low is 26°F (-3.5°C) per Japan Meteorological Agency normals, the drive home is exactly when ice is most likely. Avoid sudden braking, sharp steering and rapid acceleration.
Speed and following distance
JAF says to drive slower than usual, avoid sudden lane changes and hard braking, keep a large gap behind the car ahead and pull away gently. The Nagano police warn against overconfidence in studless tires. Posted limits may be lowered for snow, so obey them.
Visibility and whiteouts
Darkness arrives early in December. NAOJ data put sunset in Aomori City at about 4:13 p.m. on Dec 23, so most of the return trip is in the dark. In a whiteout or snowstorm, JAF says to turn on your hazard lamps and stop somewhere safe. JNTO suggests heading for a sheltered place such as a convenience store, or pulling over carefully with hazards on and calling #110 (police) or #9910 (roadside assistance). Clear snow from the roof before you drive, since it can slide onto the windshield when you brake, and keep washer fluid rated for winter.
Route and timing
JAF recommends sticking to main roads, because narrow roads can turn into single lanes under snow, and not relying on navigation alone, since it does not show road conditions. Check JARTIC for road conditions on the day. NEXCO East may close roads preventively when heavy snow is forecast, and its guidance for heavy-snow warnings is to avoid going out unless necessary.
If you get stuck
JAF's advice: rock the car gently back and forth to pack snow around spinning wheels, use gravel from roadside boxes where available, and keep the exhaust clear of snow to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning while you wait.
Do not drink and drive
If you plan to enjoy a drink at the market, do not drive. Japan treats drunk driving very seriously, and the Kanagawa Prefectural Police note that people who knowingly ride with an intoxicated driver, and people who offer alcohol to a driver, can also be punished. In practice it is zero tolerance. Choose a sober designated driver or use a pre-booked taxi. Whether alcohol is sold at the market is not confirmed; check the official page.
Parking at Risoukyo
Parking for more than 300 vehicles is planned. A big lot is welcome, but expect a snow-packed surface and some jostling at closing time when everyone leaves together. Arrive early, park facing out if you can, carry a snow brush, and leave a few minutes after the rush if you have kids to buckle in. Do not block other cars. Rules and staff directions at the venue are the final word.
What to pack for the trip
- Winter tires or chains, snow brush, small shovel and a warm blanket in the car
- Phone charger or power bank, because cold drains batteries
- Cash in yen, in small bills, for taxis and stalls
- Warm clothing, boots with grip and hand warmers; see what to wear in Aomori winter
- Water and a snack, in case of a delay on the road
