Key points
- The easiest December day trip pairs Towada's art museum in the late morning with the Risoukyo Christmas Market, which opens at 3:00 p.m. on Dec 23 to 27 (planned).
- Sunset in the Aomori area is around 4:15 p.m. in late December, so the market is mostly a night event. Plan the drive home for the dark.
- Oirase Gorge is a great winter outing, but do it on a different day: it is a separate trip with its own timing, and winter bus service does not run.
- Decide who drives before you leave, make it a person who will not drink, and keep a taxi plan as a backup.
Why Towada works as a day trip from Misawa
Towada sits just inland from Misawa, and the Risoukyo Christmas Market is the best reason to visit in late December. Handmade Village Risoukyo, at 2-21 Torigamori, Fukamochi, Towada, hosts the market from Wednesday, Dec 23 to Sunday, Dec 27, 2026, from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. (planned). The centerpiece is a spruce tree about 36 ft (11 m) tall that was grown on the grounds. Around it, the organizers plan food trucks and stalls, handmade crafts, workshops, a stage and an eat-in area. See the English overview for the current program.
The market starts at 3:00 p.m., which leaves you a free morning and early afternoon. That is why the market pairs well with one daytime stop in Towada city. Check your navigation app for the drive time from your gate, and allow extra time on winter roads. What the official access page does say is that Misawa Station (Aoimori Railway) is about 30 minutes by taxi from Risoukyo. Our Misawa to Risoukyo winter travel guide covers routes in more depth.
Know the daylight and the snow before you plan
Two facts shape a December itinerary. First, the sun sets early. The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) lists sunset in Aomori at roughly 4:13 to 4:16 p.m. across Dec 23 to 27. If you leave Misawa in the morning, you will be driving home in full darkness. That is not a problem, but it does mean you should be comfortable driving on unfamiliar roads at night in winter.
Second, the snow. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) normals for its Towada station (1991 to 2020) show December averaging 33°F (0.6°C), with an average daily high of 40°F (4.6°C) and a low of 26°F (-3.5°C). Total December snowfall averages about 28 in (72 cm), and the deepest snow cover averages about 7.5 in (19 cm). These are averages, not a forecast. Check the weather the evening before, and be willing to change plans if a storm is forecast. For what to wear, see our Aomori winter clothing guide.
For off-base travel and winter driving, follow your unit's and the base's current guidance. Nothing in this article replaces that.
Sample itinerary 1: art, lunch, then the Christmas Market
This is the main plan for a single day. It uses the late morning and early afternoon for Towada city, then the evening for Risoukyo.
- About 10:00 to 10:30 a.m.: Leave Misawa. Fill the gas tank and clear the windows and roof of snow before you go.
- About 11:30 a.m.: Arrive at the Towada Art Center in central Towada.
- About 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.: Spend time with the art, then have a late lunch in town.
- About 2:15 p.m.: Head to Risoukyo with a margin. Parking is planned for 300+ spaces, but snow on the way can slow you down.
- 3:00 p.m.: The market opens. Walk around while there is still light.
- About 4:15 p.m.: Sunset. The tree and the stalls look different once it is dark.
- 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.: Dinner at the eat-in area, then head home before the very last hour if you have little ones or a long drive.
The Towada Art Center in winter
The Towada Art Center is a contemporary art museum in the middle of Towada city. According to its official visitor page, it is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with last admission 30 minutes before closing, and it is closed on Mondays. Its published closing days for December 2026 are Dec 7, 14 and 21 (all Mondays) and then Dec 28 to 31. That means it is open every day of the market, Dec 23 to 27, and also on Dec 24 and 25. The Art Center says its Cube Cafe & Shop runs 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the cafe and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for the shop, but the same page notes that its hours listings are slightly inconsistent, so call ahead if timing matters. Exhibits change, so check the official visitor page for what is on.
One practical winter note from the Art Center itself: from Dec 1, 2026 its own small car park is closed for the season, and the Nishi-nibancho parking lot is the one to use. It lists 86 spaces, or about 75 in winter depending on snow, so arrive early on a busy day. Paid visitors get free parking tickets there.
The museum also has outdoor works along the street and in the park across from the buildings. japan-guide.com says these are free to see at any time, and it adds that the buildings are lit until 9:00 p.m. as part of an artwork. The Art Center's own page does not mention evening lighting, so check before you rely on it.
Where to eat in Towada
Towada is known for bara-yaki, a dish of thinly sliced beef short rib stir-fried with a lot of onion in a sweet soy-based sauce, cooked on an iron plate. The Towada community site Towakomyu says it likely began in the 1950s near the U.S. base in Misawa and then spread to Towada. It is usually served at yakiniku (grilled meat) restaurants and casual diners, sometimes over rice.
The Tohoku Tourism Promotion Organization's site lists one specific restaurant for it: Tsukasa Barayaki Public Restaurant, at 15-41 Inau-cho in Towada, with a lunch set listed at ¥1,000. Its published hours were 11:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., but listings like this go out of date, so call or check a map app before you drive over. It is one example, not an endorsement.
Beyond that, plan generically. Look for a restaurant that is open all day through the afternoon, since many Japanese restaurants close between lunch and dinner. If you expect to eat at the market, have a light lunch. Food at the market is planned (food trucks, food stalls, and an eat-in area), but what is sold has not been announced. Our food and drinks guide covers what to expect.
Sample itinerary 2: a short and low-effort option
If your day is tight, or the roads look bad, skip the museum. Leave Misawa around 1:00 to 1:30 p.m., arrive for the 3:00 p.m. opening, see the tree in the last light, eat, and be on the road by 7:00 or 8:00 p.m. You get the full market with a lot less driving in the dark. If you want to see the stage lineup, note that an idol live show is planned as a secret main act on Sunday, Dec 27, the last day.
Oirase Gorge: a separate trip, not an add-on
The Oirase Gorge is the other big Towada-area winter draw, and it is tempting to fit it in on the same day. We would not. It adds a lot of driving, the light is short in December, and the market is the evening plan. Make it a separate day instead.
A few verified details. japan-guide.com notes that there is no bus service to the Oirase area from mid-November through March, so in winter you would be driving yourself or joining a tour. Winter road conditions on the gorge road change often, so check the situation locally before you set out. Hoshino Resorts' Oirase Keiryu Hotel runs a guided Frozen Waterfall Night Tour [Light] from Dec 25, 2026 to Feb 28, 2027, at 6:00, 7:00, 8:00 or 9:00 p.m. It costs ¥2,200 per person, runs about an hour, is led in Japanese, and requires a reservation by 6:00 p.m. the day before. The hotel also lists an Icefall Christmas program from Dec 4 to 25, 4:00 to 9:30 p.m., with a themed tree. Whether non-guests can join either one is not stated on those pages, so ask the hotel. For more ideas, see winter things to do around Towada.
Getting home safely
- Pick a designated driver now. Japan treats drunk driving very seriously. A Misawa Air Base article summarizing the penalties notes that SOFA members driving off base face the full force of the law, and that passengers and people who supply alcohol can also be penalized. In practice, treat it as zero tolerance: if the driver has had a drink, do not drive.
- Keep a taxi backup. Misawa Station is about 30 minutes by taxi from Risoukyo, according to the official access page. Late-night taxis, fares and last trains vary, so ask about booking ahead before you go.
- Leave a buffer. If snow starts, leave earlier than planned. The market runs until 9:00 p.m., but nobody is required to stay until the end.
- Pack for a breakdown. Warm layers, a charged phone, a scraper and a blanket in the car cost nothing and could matter on a cold night.
- Stay on main roads at night where you can, and slow down for corners and bridges, which ice up first.
If you are coming by train and taxi, our English access page lists station options.
If you want a second visit: the New Year fireworks
A New Year countdown fireworks display is planned at Risoukyo on Dec 31, 2026 from 10:00 p.m. That is a very different, very late outing, so see our fireworks guide before deciding.

FAQ
Is Towada a realistic day trip from Misawa?
Yes, with a sensible schedule. Towada is the next city inland, and Misawa Station is about 30 minutes by taxi from Risoukyo. Check your navigation app for the drive time from your gate. In winter, add a buffer for snow.
Is the Towada Art Center open during the Christmas Market dates?
According to its official closing-day list, it is closed on Mondays and on Dec 28 to 31. That makes Dec 23 to 27 open days. The usual hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Always confirm on the official site before you go.
Can I combine Oirase Gorge and the Christmas Market on one day?
It is possible in theory but not recommended. December days are short, winter buses do not run, and the market is an evening event. Treat Oirase as a separate trip.
What time should I leave Misawa to see the market in daylight?
The market opens at 3:00 p.m. (planned) and sunset is around 4:15 p.m., so you have about an hour of light. Aim to arrive by 3:00 p.m. and leave home with enough margin for snow.
Where can I eat in Towada?
Towada's local specialty is bara-yaki, beef short rib with onions. One restaurant listed on a Tohoku tourism site is Tsukasa Barayaki Public Restaurant, but check its current hours first. At the market itself, food stalls and an eat-in area are planned, with specifics not yet announced.
