Key points
- Christmas Eve, Thursday, Dec 24, 2026, falls inside the market's five days (Dec 23 to 27, 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., planned). In Japan the night is traditionally a date night.
- The star is a spruce about 36 ft (11 m) tall that was grown at Risoukyo, with stalls, a stage and an eat-in area planned around it.
- Arrive near 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. for the last daylight, then stay through sunset (around 4:15 p.m.) for the night view. Dress for standing still outdoors.
- Decide who drives now. Japan has zero tolerance in practice for drinking and driving, so either one of you stays dry or you take a taxi.
Why Christmas Eve is a date night in Japan
Christmas in Japan is not mainly a religious or family holiday, and that surprises many visitors from the US. Christmas Eve in particular is widely seen as a romantic night. A JapanesePod101 overview describes it as a romantic night that, for many young couples, rivals Valentine's Day, with restaurants in big cities booked weeks ahead and neighborhoods lit up with illuminations. Cake is part of it too: a sponge cake with whipped cream and strawberries is the classic Japanese Christmas treat. Our Christmas in Japan explainer covers the traditions in more depth.
That makes the Risoukyo Christmas Market a natural date night if you are stationed near Misawa. It runs Wednesday, Dec 23 to Sunday, Dec 27, 2026, from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. (planned), at Handmade Village Risoukyo in Towada. Dec 24 is a Thursday. See the English overview for the latest program, and note that everything here is described as planned and may change.
The market at night: the tree, the stalls, the stage
The centerpiece is a Christmas tree: a spruce about 36 ft (11 m) tall, grown at Risoukyo itself. The organizers plan stalls around the tree, including food trucks and food stalls, handmade crafts and workshops, and a stage with DJs, dance and singing. An eat-in area is also planned. A tree-lighting ceremony is planned for the opening day, Dec 23; check the official page (Japanese) and the English overview for the time.
A couple of other planned elements work well for two people: kamakura (traditional snow huts) and a sled slide. They are aimed at families, but they depend on snow and on daylight and queues, so treat them as bonuses.
The stage lineup is planned to include a secret main act, an idol live show, on Sunday, Dec 27. If you want music and a bigger crowd, that is the night. If you want a calmer evening, a weeknight like Dec 24 may feel quieter, though crowds are hard to predict for any night.
A sample evening for two
- 3:00 to 3:30 p.m.: Arrive when the market opens. Parking is planned for 300+ spaces, and arriving early avoids a rush.
- 3:30 to 4:15 p.m.: Stroll the grounds in the last daylight. This is the best time for photos of the tree without needing a night mode.
- 4:15 p.m. onward: Sunset. Stay near the tree as the sky goes blue and the lights come on, if they do.
- About 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.: Dinner from the stalls and a warm drink, eating at the eat-in area or near the stall you bought from.
- 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.: The stage, handmade-craft browsing, or one more lap of the tree. Pick out a small gift from a craft stall.
- 8:00 to 8:30 p.m.: Head home before the final rush. The market closes at 9:00 p.m. (planned).
If you want a sit-down dinner somewhere else, book ahead. The JapanesePod101 piece says big-city restaurants fill weeks ahead for Christmas Eve; Towada is usually calmer, but booking ahead is still wise. For daytime ideas before the market, our Misawa to Towada day-trip guide suggests the Towada Art Center, which is open every day of the market dates except Monday and closes at 5:00 p.m.
Warm drinks and food
Hot wine and hot chocolate are classics at European Christmas markets, and they are what many people picture for a market like this. Whether Risoukyo will sell either one has not been announced, and neither have the food vendors. Check the official page for the vendor list when it appears. Our food and drinks guide explains how the planned food trucks and stalls work.
The practical point is simple: whoever drives does not drink alcohol, and if you plan to share a drink, plan your ride first.
Photo tips for a winter night
- Shoot at dusk, not just after dark. From about 3:45 to 4:45 p.m., there is enough light for your phone to capture both the tree and each other, with the sky still blue.
- Use your phone's night mode and brace your arm against your body or a railing. Tap on the brightest part of the tree so the lights do not wash out.
- Keep your phone warm. Cold drains batteries fast. Keep it inside your coat between shots and bring a small power bank.
- Use the tree's height. At about 36 ft (11 m), the tree is easiest to fit in a vertical photo from a few steps back. Put the two of you in the foreground.
- Ask before including strangers. If you want other people in the shot, or want to take a picture of a stall's staff, ask first. See our etiquette guide.
- Ask a stranger to take your picture, using "shashin o onegaishimasu" (a photo, please). Most people are happy to help.
Staying warm, so the evening stays romantic
The Japan Meteorological Agency's December normals for Towada (1991 to 2020) are a mean of 33°F (0.6°C), an average daily high of 40°F (4.6°C) and an average daily low of 26°F (-3.5°C), with about 28 in (72 cm) of snow in the month. After dark it will be colder than the daily high, and standing still makes it feel colder. These are averages, not a forecast.
- Layers: thermal base layer, warm mid-layer, windproof outer layer. Our winter clothing guide goes into detail.
- Feet: waterproof, insulated boots with real tread. Cold feet end dates faster than anything.
- Kairo: disposable hand warmers are sold in Japan at drugstores and 100-yen shops. Bring a few.
- Hat, scarf, gloves: and thin liner gloves so you can use your phone.
- Shared warmth: a heated paid seat is available as a crowdfunding reward (see below). For two people, you would need two.
Advance tickets for two
Planned regular admission is ¥1,500 per adult, and regular tickets are not yet on sale ("coming soon"). Advance tickets are available only as rewards on READYFOR, a Japanese crowdfunding site: admission for 2 is ¥3,000, admission for 4 is ¥5,000, and a ticket with a heated paid seat for 1 person is ¥5,000, each plus READYFOR's separate system fee. The campaign is All-or-Nothing with a ¥2,000,000 goal and ends Tuesday, Nov 3, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. JST. If the goal is not reached, the market cannot be held and supporters are refunded. Our READYFOR guide walks through the process. The site is in Japanese, so a Japanese-speaking friend can be useful.
Childcare-free logistics
A date night means arranging someone to watch the kids. Sort this out early, because Christmas Eve is likely to be a busy night for sitters. For childcare, follow your usual arrangement. A few planning points:
- Give your sitter your return time. The market closes at 9:00 p.m. (planned), and you will have a drive or taxi ride after that.
- Plan to leave earlier than the close, around 8:00 p.m., so you are not back after the sitter's limit.
- Keep your phones charged and share your location with the sitter or a family member.
- If you would rather bring the kids, the market's planned snow play and pricing for kids are covered in our family guide.
Getting there and back: designated driver or taxi
This is the part not to improvise. Misawa Station is about 30 minutes by taxi from Risoukyo, according to the official access page. By car, the official page gives about 50 minutes from Hachinohe and about 70 minutes from Aomori City. Check your navigation app for the drive time from your gate. Our winter travel guide and the English access page have the options.
On drinking: a Misawa Air Base article summarizing Japan's tougher penalties lists jail time and fines for driving drunk or under the influence, and also for passengers who knew the driver had been drinking and for people who supply alcohol to a driver. It also says SOFA members driving off base face the full force of the law. The simplest rule is one designated driver who drinks nothing at all. If you both want a drink, take a taxi and arrange it in advance. Taxis are scarce in the evening near Risoukyo, so do not count on hailing one on the spot. For off-base travel and winter driving, follow your unit's and the base's current guidance.
A second date: New Year fireworks on Dec 31
If the evening goes well, a New Year countdown fireworks display is planned at Risoukyo on Dec 31, 2026, from 10:00 p.m. That is later and colder than the market, and a great fit for a second date. All the same advice applies, especially the one about who is driving. See our fireworks guide and read up on Japanese New Year traditions too.

Can we get hot wine or hot chocolate there?
Both are classic at European Christmas markets, but vendors and menus have not been announced. Check the official page. If the driver is not drinking, hot chocolate or tea may be an option if sold.
What if neither of us wants to skip alcohol?
Take a taxi and book it ahead. Misawa Station is about 30 minutes by taxi, per the official access page. Do not drive after drinking; Japan's penalties apply to drivers, to passengers who knew, and to people who supply the alcohol.
Should we buy advance tickets?
Advance tickets are sold only as READYFOR rewards until Nov 3 at 6:00 p.m. JST: admission for 2 is ¥3,000. Regular tickets are coming soon, with planned adult admission of ¥1,500 each. The crowdfunding also decides whether the market can be held.
