Towada Christmas Market 2026 at Risoukyo: Guide for Misawa

Updated October 30, 2026

Images are for illustration.

The Risoukyo Christmas Market 2026 runs Dec 23 to 27 in Towada, about 30 minutes by taxi from Misawa Station. Here is everything Misawa families need: dates, admission, the 36-ft spruce, parking, tickets and what to wear.

Key points

  • The Risoukyo Christmas Market 2026 is planned for Wednesday, Dec 23 to Sunday, Dec 27, 2026, from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., outdoors in Towada, Aomori.
  • The centerpiece is a spruce about 36 ft (11 m) tall that was grown at Risoukyo itself. Food stalls, crafts, a stage and snow play are planned around it.
  • Planned admission: adults ¥1,500, students ¥1,000, junior high and younger ¥500, age 5 and under free. Regular tickets are not on sale yet.
  • The event only happens if a crowdfunding goal is met by Nov 3, 2026, so read the tickets section below before you plan.

What the Risoukyo Christmas Market is

Handmade Village Risoukyo (手づくり村 鯉艸郷, pronounced roughly "ree-so-kyo") is a flower garden and craft village in Towada, Aomori Prefecture. In late December 2026 it plans to hold its first Christmas market: a five-day, outdoor, evening event built around one very tall tree.

If you have been to a Christmas market in Germany or Austria, picture that idea set in northern Japan: stalls and lights around a big tree, snow on the ground if the weather cooperates, and a stage nearby. The details are Japanese, though. Handmade crafts and local food are the focus, and there are snow huts and a sled slide for kids. Everything below is described as planned, because programs can change before the event. The English overview is the page to check for updates.

Towada is a nearby city, and the market is an outing a local family can realistically do in an evening. See our day-trip guide from Misawa to Towada if you want to combine it with daytime sightseeing.

Dates and hours

The market is planned for five days: Wednesday, Dec 23 through Sunday, Dec 27, 2026. Hours are planned as 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. (15:00 to 21:00) each day. That timing matters. In late December the sun sets in Aomori at about 4:13 p.m. (per National Astronomical Observatory of Japan data for Aomori City), so the first hour is daylight and the rest of the evening is dark, when the lights around the tree do their work.

Dec 23 is a Wednesday, Dec 24 and 25 are Thursday and Friday, and Dec 26 and 27 are Saturday and Sunday. Dec 24 and 25 are ordinary working days in Japan, and Christmas Eve is traditionally more of a couples' night out than a family day. Weekend evenings are the likeliest to be busy. If you prefer smaller crowds, an earlier weekday slot may be calmer, but nobody can promise attendance in advance.

The 36-ft spruce

The tree is a spruce about 36 ft (11 m) tall that was grown on the Risoukyo grounds. A tree grown on the grounds, rather than brought in, is a nice local detail. The market is arranged around it, with stalls placed around the base. A tree-lighting ceremony is planned for the opening day, Wednesday, Dec 23; the time will be posted on the official pages closer to the date.

For families, the tree makes an easy meeting point. If someone wanders off in the dark, "meet at the tree" works as a plan, and it is worth agreeing on before you split up.

What is planned inside the market

Stalls

Planned: food trucks and food stalls, handmade crafts and workshops around the tree. The organizers invite vendors by Instagram direct message to @risoukyo_event, so the final lineup is still forming. Whether any particular drink or dish will be sold is not confirmed. Hot wine and hot chocolate are classics at European markets, but check the official page before assuming either will be on offer. Our food and drinks guide covers what to look for.

Stage

A stage is planned with DJs, dance and singing. On Dec 27, an idol live show is planned as a secret main act. Idol groups are a big part of Japanese pop culture, and a live show is usually a high-energy, fan-oriented performance, so expect an energetic, fan-oriented crowd.

Eat-in area

An eat-in area is planned. Outdoor winter events are much more comfortable when you can sit down with food, and you will see why in the weather section below. Details such as heating and seating capacity have not been announced.

Snow play for kids

Kamakura (snow huts), snowman making and a sled slide are planned. These depend on snowfall, and the Japan Meteorological Agency's Towada normals show about 28 in (72 cm) of snow across all of December, so it is likely but not guaranteed. Our family guide has the detail on strollers, ages and timing.

Admission and tickets

Planned admission prices

  • Adults: ¥1,500
  • High school and university students: ¥1,000
  • Junior high and younger: ¥500
  • Age 5 and under: free

Regular admission tickets are marked "coming soon". They are not on sale yet, and the organizers say they will announce sales on the official page and on LINE. Prices are planned, not final.

Advance tickets only through crowdfunding

Right now the only way to secure advance entry is a crowdfunding project on READYFOR, a Japanese crowdfunding site. The relevant rewards are:

  • Admission for 2: ¥3,000
  • Admission for 4: ¥5,000
  • Ticket with a heated paid seat (1 person): ¥5,000

READYFOR charges a separate system fee on top. The project is "All-or-Nothing" with a goal of ¥2,000,000 and closes on Tuesday, Nov 3, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. Japan time. It raised ¥1,000,000 in its first week. If the goal is not reached, the market cannot be held and supporters are refunded. That is the main risk to plan around: until the goal is reached, treat the dates as hopeful. If you are reading this after Nov 3, check the official page (Japanese) for the result.

The READYFOR site is in Japanese. We cannot confirm that it has an English interface or accepts foreign-issued cards, so you may want a Japanese-speaking friend, coworker or spouse to help. We explain the process in our READYFOR guide for English speakers.

Getting there from Misawa

The venue is Handmade Village Risoukyo, 2-21 Torigamori, Fukamochi, Towada, Aomori 034-0106. From the official access page:

  • Aoimori Railway, Misawa Station: about 30 minutes by taxi
  • Aoimori Railway, Kamikita Station: about 20 minutes by taxi
  • Tohoku Shinkansen, Shichinohe-Towada Station: about 20 minutes by taxi
  • By car: about 50 minutes from Hachinohe, about 70 minutes from Aomori City, about 40 minutes from Oirase Gorge

We do not have a verified driving time from the Misawa Air Base gates, so use your navigation app and add padding for snow. The full winter-driving rundown is in Misawa to Risoukyo in winter, and the English access page has the official directions.

Parking

Parking for more than 300 cars is planned. That is a lot for a small venue, but a five-day evening event can still fill up on a good night. Arrive early if you plan to drive, and expect a snow-packed lot. Bring a snow brush and shovel.

Do not drink and drive

Japan has a zero-tolerance approach to drinking and driving in practice, and the Kanagawa Prefectural Police note that passengers who knowingly ride with an intoxicated driver and people who serve alcohol to a driver can also be punished. If you plan to have a drink at the market, take a taxi or have a sober designated driver. Do not rely on finding a late taxi at a rural venue. Book the return trip ahead of time if you can.

What to wear and bring

Treat this as a stand-around evening in near-freezing air. The JMA December normals for Towada (1991 to 2020) are a mean of 33°F (0.6°C), an average high of 40°F (4.6°C) and an average low of 26°F (-3.5°C). After dark, with wind and hours of standing, it will feel colder than that. Wear:

  • Thermal base layer, fleece or wool mid-layer, and a windproof outer layer
  • Waterproof, insulated boots with real tread (snow can be packed and icy)
  • Hat, scarf and gloves or mittens, plus a spare dry pair for kids
  • Kairo (disposable hand warmers), sold at Japanese drugstores and 100-yen shops
  • A small cash stash, since many market stalls may take cash only (see below)

See our full what-to-wear guide for details.

Cash, language and etiquette

Small stalls at Japanese events often prefer cash. Stalls at the market take cash, QR-code payments and cards (each stall decides which), so bring some yen in small bills and coins as a backup; see cash and payments at Japan events. You do not need Japanese to enjoy the evening, but a few phrases help, and we list them in Japanese phrases for a Christmas market. Basic manners at local events are in etiquette at local Japanese events.

Christmas in Japan: set expectations

Christmas Day is not a family holiday in Japan. Christmas Eve is a romantic night out, KFC and strawberry shortcake are traditions, and most people work on Dec 25. A market on Dec 23 to 27 sits right in that rhythm. If you want the cultural background, read Christmas in Japan explained. Couples might like a Christmas date night in Towada.

New Year countdown fireworks

Risoukyo plans a New Year countdown fireworks show on Dec 31, 2026, starting at 10:00 p.m. This is a separate planned event. It is a late, cold night, so read our New Year countdown guide for what to expect and how Japan rings in the year.
